Why Winning Streaks are Doomed

As a successful sports bettor you should learn to become emotionally detached from the outcome of your plays. This is twofold; it not only means that you don’t get upset about losers, but you also do not start getting excited about winners. This includes both winning and losing streaks as well, and it can be difficult to do.

Lets face it, the reason we got into sports betting is because we love sports. It’s fun to watch your team win and it sucks to watch them lose. When we first started betting we rode an emotional roller coaster on every game we had money on, remeber? Admit it, you couldn’t tear yourself away from the ticker at the bottom of ESPN2.

As a sports bettor matures and learns how to actually make money from this hobby, he stops worrying about every wager. There are only two things that matter: Getting the best of it, and proper position sizing. If those two things are handled correctly then he knows his account will grow. But he also knows there will be both winning and losing streaks along the way, both of which will eventually correct. A mature sports bettor doesn’t have to watch the games anymore, and will even likely opt for watching what is expected to be a better game than the one he has money riding on.

The worst thing you can do is get excited about a winning streak and start over-estimating the probabilities of your selections. This can lead to improper position sizing and emotional involvement again. And the letdown is coming. You should know that. the x factor is just too large in sports to maintain a hot streak for any meaningful length of time.

Streaks are normal and they don’t mean anything really, other than you can expect a reversion to the mean in the near future. Just keep getting the best of it and keep your position size down where it belongs.
