Halftime Betting in Basketball

Let’s face it, it’s tough to beat the bookie. That’s why they stay in business. They are there year after year, but many sports bettors are forced to give up the hobby when they eventually run bad and lose too much. (If they sized their wagers better this wouldn’t happen, but that is a topic for another post.)

Basketball is a sport that offers many wagering opportunities. Every day there is a smorgasbord of available propositions. More choices is a good thing, because with a large board there is sure to be some value in there somewhere. The line-makers probably didn’t get them all right.

Now throw in the prospect of half-time betting and you really have some fertile ground for finding value. I love half-time betting in basketball. This sport is full of opportunity. As many of you know, I routinely pursue a strategy of betting on good teams that are behind, a tactic that I refer to as “finding undervalued comebacks.”

Yesterday I pulled it off again. Michigan State was a 7.5 favorite over Ohio State and led at the half by 13. On Tradesports I lifted a bid at halftime to sell Michigan -7.5 for 78.5, getting more than 3-1 odds on my money that OSU would cover. Then I headed to happy hour for a large mug of ale to watch the second half.

Ohio State played well in the second half and covered the spread. For a few moments on Tradesports at halftime there was a 96 bid on the Spartans winning the game outright, but I was too slow to grab it. I don’t know who briefly wanted to risk $96 to win $4 but those few times that the Buckeyes were within a bucket of tying would have been fun for me and stress for him, whoever he was! Anyway the beer was particularly delicious.
