NBA East Conference Futures
Today it’s time to go shopping for my NBA Eastern Conference futures wagers. That is, betting on teams to win the Eastern conference playoffs this year. If you are a regular reader you know that I like lottery tickets, figuring that’s where the value lies. These contracts are displayed on Tradesports as NBA.EAST.TEAM. (replace TEAM with CELTICS, etc). Here are the offers up as of right now:
Celtics 39.9
Pistons 30.9
Magic 9.8
Cavaliers 9.2
Raptors 5.5
Wizards 3.5
Bulls 1.8
Hawks 1.0
76ers 0.8
Nets 0.4
All the Rest 0.1
All right, the best way to start is with anything that just jumps off the board at you. See anything? (Hint: It helps to have the standings from NBA.com open on another tab).
Orlando is the only real standout, leading their division by 8 games and selling for less than 10. It’s not thrilling, but playable. Reason being is if you wait for the playoffs you can probably still get them for not too much more than this due to Celtics-mania this season. But I am going to pick up a little here.
Now, let’s look at the team chasing Orlando. The Wizards at 3.5 - now that’s more my style! At 8 games back risking $35 to win $965 this is a no brainer, if nothing else to insure the Orlando position.
I honestly can’t see any team in the other two conferences catching Boston or Detroit now that we have 50+ games under our belt. So the only thing left is to pick a wildcard team. At 9.2 Cleveland is a little high priced, being as they are only the front runner by about a game. Toronto looks like a better bet at 5.5, as this position can be sold for a likely 100% profit when they inevitably pull ahead by a couple games at some point.
I am also gonna pick up just a little Nets and 76ers just for fun. So to recap, here are the positions I entered today:
NBA.EAST.MAGIC 9.8
NBA.EAST.WIZARDS 3.5
NBA.EAST.RAPTORS 5.5
NBA.EAST.76ERS 0.8
NBA.EAST.NETS 0.4
Keep in mind that I may not hold every position until the end. Also keep in mind what the famous trader George Soros said, Money is Made by Discounting the Obvious and Betting on the Unexpected.
